Summer School Starts

Summer in Arizona means staying inside all day. Perfect time for school work!

We learned all about our digestive systems today. The girls thought it was really interesting. They asked a ton of questions and studied the pictures in the book for a looong time. We had a lot of fun acting out the digestive process on each others’ bellies.

Afterwards we colored some diagrams of the stomach and intestines.

Brooklyn was really particular about her diagram. She wanted to color it just like the picture in our book.

Payson thought eating was better than coloring.

Sierra started singing the ABC song while she worked. Brooklyn interrupted her to sing it louder. Sierra got annoyed so just started singing “8, 8, 8, 8” to trip up Brooklyn.

Singing about 8s really did it for Brooklyn.

Payson was searching for just the right color of crayon..

But then big sister ruined the fun.

He showed her, though, by finding one behind her chair.

I got a surprise from Sonlight in the mail yesterday. Earlier this year I won their annual photo contest and they sent me a framed copy of their 2009 catalog cover. That’s me and the girls on the cover! Exciting, huh??

Go here to get your free catalog with us on the cover! And when it arrives have fun looking through, there are a lot more pictures of other families inside with their stories of homeschooling. Sonlight is an amazing curriculum πŸ™‚

After we finished school stuff, we started dinner.
Payson refuses to drink his bottle unless I’m holding him. He threw a major fit while I was slaving over Kraft macaroni and cheese.

Nothing says love like powdered cheese.

  • Isn't it so exciting when your kids love learning?! My kids loved when we did a digestive unit too. If you have a big roll of art paper or some poster board, a really fun activity we found was to trace their bodies on the paper, hang them on the wall, blow up the worksheets of the body parts inside, we did everything as we learned about them: digestive system, nervous, bones, muscles…you get the picture. And then glued them to our “bodies”. The kids LOVED it!

I love how Payson is just getting into everything but staying content while the rest of you work. Cute little guy. πŸ™‚ And yeah for your cover! I'm sure that just put a big smile on your face to receive that framed catalog! I ordered a copy, I have never looked into Sonlight so thought I'd take a peek. πŸ˜‰

It's so funny to me that you guys have to stay in for the summer, we are JUST getting to go spend time outside! We're pretty much trapped inside from October till May, lol.

  • Love it! All of it! [smile]

As fun as coloring can be, I think I'm with Payson: Eating is better. And powered cheese is a very powerful form of love [smile]. Keep up the great work, and thanks–as always–for sharing these glimpses into your life.

  • How fun! We too will be homeschooling DD. She just turned four, so we won't get too official just yet. However we do many themed projects here to get our groove down when the time comes. I love your blog for inspiration!

    Off to request a catalog!

  • Congrats on the cover, I've always wondered if you won, I think I might have asked in a comment once. Your photo looks beautiful on the cover. You are such a fun mom!

  • I am with you on the staying inside in the summer thing! Here in TX it's the same deal. We're able to go out in the early morning and evening still, but I don't know how much longer that will last. We just started a unit on the desert and my girls are loving it. I love to see what other homeschooling kids are doing!

I ordered the Sonlight catalog, can't wait to see it in person. I still think that is so awesome that ya'll are on the cover!

  • I bet the Sonlight people are wondering why there is sudden HUGE request for that catalog!! I went straight to it and signed up after reading this post!! I really need to check into those materials anyway! πŸ˜‰ Thanks for the link! That's SO cool that yall are on the cover! I remember that contest…did we all get to vote on that or something? Maybe you just did a blog post about it…anyway, I remember loving that shot of the 3 of you! πŸ™‚ This post was so cute! I'm so glad to see that you are doing “school” with a toddling Payson roaming around too! I often wonder how in the heck I will accomplish this school stuff with Levi ruling the house! lol πŸ˜‰ Anyway, it is encouraging to see that you do it all the time!!! πŸ™‚ Our kids are so close to the same ages, and I'm so glad that I stumbled upon your friendship! πŸ˜‰

  • That is so awesome about you and the girls being on the cover! I love how they framed it for you! It's such a cute picture, so I totally see why you won!

  • You're so funny. Love the hearts all over the pic with the man n cheese. LOL.

That looks like a lot of fun, the homeschooling. Cute pictures too.

  • Yippee, that is so awesome that they sent you a framed copy of the cover! I love that shot of you and the girls- I just requested a copy of the catalog too! My dh is weirdly against homeschooling but I would LOVE to do it… maybe more info on the subject will sway him my way, haha… and if nothing else, I'll have some activity ideas for the kids over the summer while school's out! πŸ˜‰
